We’ve been paying special attention to the topic of privacy lately, what with the Facebook case and the GDPR, which will replace the old regulation as of May 25. Everyone knows how important the security of personal data is; in this regard the European Union has been directly active since 2012 with the Cert-Eu, acronym for Computer Emergency Response Team, a group of experts specialized in cyber-security from the main European institutions (European Commission, Council of the European Union, European Committee of the Regions and European Economic and Social Committee). Cert-Eu was born precisely because of the recent cyber-attacks, increasingly heavy and increasingly frequent, that have caused several problems to the European Union; a well-known example is the Wannacryransomware that in 2017 affected more than two hundred thousand computers in more than one hundred and fifty states. Back in 2010 in the European Digital Agenda, the European Union declared that it needed a reinforced and efficient cyber defense system, so the help of four cyber-security experts known as “Rat der IT Weisen” -committee of IT wise men- was requested, drawing up a report of how to establish an emergency team to counter cyber threats, finished in November 2010. The Digital Agenda for Europe also suggested that each EU member state, set up its own defense team. Cert-Eu was thus born on September 11, 2012.

A few days ago, the Director General of DG Innovation and Technological Support of the Eurochamber, as well as a member of the steering committee of Cert-Eu, during an interview said the officialization of the same: “The European Parliament has created the figure of the Cyber-security officer and recently the birth of Cert-Eu, the interinstitutional committee for rapid response to cyber threats, has been made official”. Viella concludes by saying: “an important change of step that greatly strengthens us in the fight against cyber-crime and political crime in the IT sector”.

What is certain is that, despite the additional security that this operational body provides us with, the risk of a virus or malware attacking our computers obviously remains very high, and no matter how many antivirus programs we may equip our devices with, we will never be immune. The first and most effective bulwark of defense, as well as the biggest security hole, is in fact us.

For over 50 years, SMAU has been presenting itself on the Italian and European territory with a circuit of events dedicated to companies and professionals, in order to meet their need for innovation by encouraging them to meet digital solution providers. In 2016, the roadshow, which started in March from Padua, will end with the Neapolitan stage next 15 and 16 December, passing through Bologna, Berlin, Turin, Florence and Milan.

Innovation in its broadest sense is what the promoters of this review are proposing. SMAU addresses a wide range of sectors: not only ICT, innovation becomes the imperative for any company that wants to keep up with the times, from agribusiness to trade and retail, from construction and engineering to furniture and design and many others.

During the stop in Milan last October, the staff of IT solution also participated in what has become a real business matching platform for all companies: an opportunity to look to the future by seizing the opportunities offered by new technologies, the digital world and the most promising startups. Not only exhibitors – among them many companies that are already partners of IT solution: SMAU also presents itself as a creative laboratory where ideas, advice, and the most daring and far-sighted insights are presented in numerous workshops that every hour and in multiple locations animate and entertain the curiosity of the participants.

The next stop as well as the closing of the 2016 review will be held in Naples on December 15 and 16 at Pavilion 6 of the Fiera d’Oltremare.

Clocks, fitness sensors, cars, radios, air conditioning systems, but also household appliances, light bulbs, cameras, pieces of furniture, containers for transporting goods are just a few examples of what is called the Internet of Things or, IoT – Internet of Things. A definition that identifies all those devices, other than computers, connected to the internet. Potentially anything could be connected to the network, just two simple characteristics: have an IP address that allows identification in the network and the ability to exchange data without human intervention.

From simple objects to houses, buildings up to entire parts of cities: the range of action of modern technologies seems to have no boundaries and is destined to inexorably simplify the lives of users of these tools connected to the network and not only. All people are in fact users of things connected to the Internet, even if not voluntarily and sometimes not even being aware of it: an example is represented by the Swiss experience of intelligent traffic lights that turn green when they “see” that a car is close to the traffic light and that no car is passing on the other side.

Optimization of time and resources and savings in energy and fixed costs are ensured in the daily life of a private citizen and in the work activity, from the agricultural producer to the village shopkeeper to the big industry. The entrepreneur who finds himself not only remotely managing his burglar alarm and/or video surveillance system (examples of the Internet of Things now well established), can also decide to set his heating and air conditioning system according to the presence or absence of people in the company or even, in the case of producers, it is possible to exploit the growing amount of data coming from equipment and suppliers going to calibrate the production itself according to the needs of the market practically in real time.

Many advantages but also some risks accompany the modern conception of staying connected. For ordinary users, but also for companies, the greatest risk concerns the protection of privacy and the correct use of data. The automatic sharing of data about one’s daily habits and behaviors can make us ideal targets for advertising campaigns or victims of unwanted guests. There are also all the risks related to device security, which if not properly protected could lead to even more serious consequences.

Smart working, from the English “agile work“, identifies a work reality that is now widespread and that involves not only operators in the IT sector but also more and more realities of the banking world and also manufacturing.

For some, smart working is mistakenly equated with teleworking and is reductively considered a mere work from home. The premise of this modern understanding of work is that employees are evaluated not for the number of hours they actually work, but for the results they achieve. As this ideology is assimilated, the office moves along with the worker himself: from home, from the bar, from the park, from wherever the smart worker remains in contact with employers and colleagues. The term smart refers precisely to the ability to easily stay in touch with one’s work, allowing the worker to reconcile work with family commitments and cope with the so-called unexpected.

Not just benefits for workers: companies that practice smart working have also found significant pros, from the ability to have smaller work environments to significant savings in terms of bills and permits. As for productivity, when you work two days a week from home, on average it increases by 20% (source: smartwork observatory of Politecnico di Milano).

Pioneering this trend was Germany’s Siemens, and it goes without saying that the first sector to embrace this project was IT, technology and consulting. In the wake of these, the major banking groups then joined in, involving a little bit all sectors.

Italy is also showing signs of increasing this work practice, going from 17% in 2015 to 30% in the current year (source: annual observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano): a phenomenon that currently mainly affects large multinationals.

Nowadays, teamwork is at the basis of all successful businesses and, when it comes to telecommunications, the idea of networking can only be linked to this concept. The team in this case is represented by several partners, complementary service providers whose synergy results in effective and highly competitive solutions.

IT solution has also embraced this way of doing business by becoming a promoter, but above all by personally using a combination of tools and services for connectivity and telecommunications with optimal performance and at the same time with immediate cost savings. It starts from the need to have a single infrastructure, complete but streamlined: this need can be easily met with VoIPtechnology. (Voice over Internet Protocol) that in telecommunications and in the information technology sector is a technology that makes it possible to make a phone conversation using an Internet connection or any other dedicated packet-switched network that uses the IP protocol. The advantages associated to VoIP are not only economic: the saving is directly connected to the possibility to keep up with the times, favoring working modalities that are slowly taking place also in our country, one of all the smart working (more details in the dedicated article “Smart working: how to reconcile work and free time increasing productivity”).

As far as VoIP technologies are concerned, IT solution is partner of VoipVoice, Florentine company born in 2006 and currently the first Business Oriented VoIP Provider in Italy. VoipVoice is part of Digitel Italia to which it entrusts the technical part of the services provided. All this is made concrete through the use of telephone equipment suitable to support these technologies, with excellent performance in terms of quality of transmissions and multiple features: for this IT solution relies on the German Snom.

For the past three years a new cyber threat has been gaining ground: it is CryptoLocker, a powerful virus that has the ability to encrypt the files of its victims’ Windows PCs and then demand a ransom payment to get the files back. Cases of CryptoLocker infection have drastically increased in the last year, as the virus itself has evolved to its third generation called TeslaCrypt 3.0.

Awareness of what this threat looks like is a basic aspect of avoiding it. The dissemination method adopted by CryptoLocker TeslaCrypt 3.0 is email, specifically via attachments or links contained in the same email message. The main trap is that the email appears to be sent by a friendly contact. However, there are signs that we can pick up to avoid being infected – in addition to having a good antivirus at our disposal. Usually, emails with which TeslaCrypt 3.0 is transmitted not only contain topics that are of no interest to the recipient, but also sloppy text: missing text, grammatical and form errors. If it’s an attachment, it’s a good idea to check whether the sender of the message is actually waiting for some kind of document: if so, pay close attention to zipper files. Another aspect that should not be underestimated and that can help us to avoid the TeslaCrypt 3.0 threat concerns the recipients of the email: keep an eye out if the email is not addressed only to us but to a list of contacts!

Unfortunately, currently no solutions have been found yet to decrypt the data and not even the ransom payment ensures the return of the data. However, we can prevent unpleasant situations like these with Backup. The IT solution staff presents the Synecaresystem, a UTM appliance that integrates in a single hardware solution, a Smart firewall with antivirus, antispam and access control, an advanced storage solution and a 3CX central unit.

In case of CryptoLocker infection, immediately disconnect all peripherals connected to the machine and do not hesitate to contact us!

Backup, protection and maintenance are basic issues that our company tries to emphasize with its customers on a daily basis.
Ouch us, often when we recommend a targeted prevention against the damage that viruses and the like can cause to our PC, as well as an annual hardware and software cleaning, we are told “But yes, the PC goes, we’ll take care of it later …”. And with a very high probability, it’s not long before the poor PC reaches the so-called “point of no return” (or almost). The formatting of the system is always a delicate aspect, not so much for the technician who will have to perform it, but more for the customer who is literally terrified by the possible loss of the precious information contained in his machine. “We told you so” – a thought that often occurs to us but that we tend to suppress for obvious reasons – does not solve the problem, either before or after.
Aware by now of the many threats that can get our data into serious trouble, why continue to risk it? As IT solution we have decided to continue to push hard on this issue: our goal is not to do gratuitous terrorism but to raise awareness of prevention among a wider audience. In this sense, there are three simple measures that we propose:
  1. Keep updated your antivirus Prohibited to go cheap! It is the very first protection we give to our computer. There are many so-called free antivirus versions that we can download, each with its own features, but unfortunately it happens that many of these programs may conflict with other features/programs of the computer. From the experience gained over the years, IT solution relies and recommends two brands of antivirus in particular: Kasperskyand Eset Nod32.
  2. Generally perform hardware and software cleanup and update check annually. In order to avoid the classic cases of PCs that “crash” or, more simply, are very slow, it is good practice to dedicate a few hours at least once a year to remove all those files that are no longer in use and/or that the system downloads automatically (without us even noticing). Also in this case it is good not to underestimate this operation that can be of different magnitude depending on the amount of work/files contained in the PC.
  3. Always have a copy of your data then evaluate the most appropriate backupsolution. In this case, it’s about avoiding the most drastic aspect associated with poor PC maintenance – data loss. Nowadays there are numerous data storage devices on the market that vary depending on the amount of data you want to store, but even for these portable memories it is not possible to completely avoid the risk of virus infection. Better to opt for ad hoc solutions that can be of various kinds depending on the needs: from backup systems that allow you to connect even more devices (nas with 2 or 4 disks) to virtual solutions that, however, require an excellent Internet connection (the Cloud). In addition to these two possibilities IT solution presents a third option that allows you to kill “two birds with one stone”. This is the Synecare integrated solution: backup and Smart firewall with antivitus, antispam and access control in a single device in addition to a 3CX central unit.
In this month, not coincidentally the highlight of the seasonal flu, we decided to devote ourselves in particular to computer security: contact us or visit us to receive advice on precautions you can take to ensure your PC a “healthy life”!

Company owners? All the advantages of owning a private Mail Server https://itsolutionsrl.it/2021/09/company-owners-all-the-advantages-of-owning-a-private-mail-server/?lang=en Fri, 17 Sep 2021 07:10:54 +0000 https://itsolutionsrl.it/2021/09/company-owners-all-the-advantages-of-owning-a-private-mail-server/

The Mail Server – consisting of software and the machine on which it is installed – performs the function of receiving and sorting e-mails between several computers, differentiating itself from the Mail Client (mail user agent) located on the end user’s machine. The usefulness of the Mail Server is obvious (the alternative would be to go back to paper, ink and stamps), however the standard protocol that manages mail transmission (SMTP) is obsolete and presents security problems, as it does not require user authentication.

If you are the owner of a company, giving up email services is unthinkable, so the ideal solution is to use a Mail Server within your structure, linked to a private domain and equipped with antivirus filter that guarantees, in addition to efficiency, total security. The advantages provided by a reserved Mail Server are many: it is possible to download several mailboxes to a single account, configure an outgoing mail server so as not to be tied to external providers and consult the archive of all e-mail contents without being connected to the Internet. There is no predefined space limit on the size of mailboxes, which are administered independently. Often, when using a public Mail Server, unopened e-mail remains in storage for days in external memory banks, thus risking the privacy of the data contained: with a private Mail Server this danger does not exist. Using the IMAP protocol also guarantees perfect synchronization and traceability of mail, regardless of the client installed. The occupied internet bandwidth is also reduced, because if in a classic scenario all the e-mails are delivered to the external server and then returned to the network (occupying twice the bandwidth), with a private Mail Server the e-mails within the domain transit exclusively internally. As far as antispam and antivirus criteria are concerned, you can decide any configuration policy yourself. Another privilege is the freedom of access to the logs, which allows you to verify the path of each e-mail until it is received by the recipient server; this procedure does not formally replace e-mail, but it still represents an excellent verification tool.

So far we have outlined the advantages included in the possession of a corporate Mail Server, but it is necessary to take into account the fact that such a device, in order to be set up, used and maintained at the best of its functions, requires a certain competence on the part of those who manage it. At this point there are two alternatives: the first – very expensive in terms of time, money and more suitable for large companies – provides training (or inclusion) in the workforce of a specialized team capable of restoring the service at all times, resolving any critical issues. The second option, ideal for small and medium-sized companies, is to use an external IT company that installs a mail server in the company (calibrated on the needs of the latter) and takes care of its management -configuration, synchronization, protection from viruses, spam, etc.- completely remotely. You will be able to take advantage of the benefits of a private mail server, without having to suffer the disadvantages at the same time: this will allow you to devote time and energy solely to the development of your business.

TheAI(Artificial Intelligence) consists in the ability of a machie to adapt to a given context by formulating autonomous solution strategies: to do this, it acts by translating the above context into algorithms– formal procedures that solve problems through a finite number of steps – more or less complex, depending on the evolutionary level that distinguishes it.
The AI field is not necessarily related to robotics, as most robots currently in circulation do not need extraordinarily advanced software and hardware. The conversation changes from the moment we start talking about service robots, designed to interact with humans by communicating, learning, and collaborating.
In recent times, thanks to a technology developed in an almost exponential way, what was previously relegated to the world of science fiction is becoming more and more realistic, attracting ethical debates. A curious fact – disturbing to some – that recently happened within FAIR(Facebook AI Research) concerns the anomaly detected during a “negotiation” between two AI prototypes. The experiment was based on testing the ability of the two machines to complete economic negotiations using human language. Everything went smoothly until the pair of computers began to communicate – and make decisions – by moving away from the anthropic idiom for which they had been programmed, and using a language unknown to the programmers themselves. The test, at that point, was aborted and the anomaly corrected. In any case, this event, documented and disclosed by the experimenters, has raised the concern of many. The idea that two machines can “plot” without the knowledge of man, in fact, alarms not only laymen and fans of sci-fi comics, but also people like Bill Gates, Ellon Musk, Steve Wozniak and even Stephen Hawking! The latter, for example, has alerted the scientific community by highlighting the huge gap between the biological/human evolutionary times and the virtual/digital ones of a machine that, according to the astrophysicist, if equipped with intelligence and started freely to the development could make giant steps in very short time, completely escaping the control and causing incalculable damages. To get an idea of the extent of such damage, think of robots equipped with the ability to self-repair, self-program and self-reproduce: devices capable of reasoning and acting at speeds tens, hundreds, thousands of times faster than ours “Sentient” devices, able to foresee human actions and reactions, exploiting our every weak point in order to subdue us, exploit us and in the end, obviously, exterminate us. Actually it is not difficult to imagine: literature and cinema, for decades, propose similar scenarios in all sauces.
Even Googlehas recently spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence in “decision-making processes”, but its reasons are much more technical. In the tech giant’s view, choices based on automated pattern detection within large sets are not neutral, but resort to patterns based on the very biases that determined the composition of the information sets.
Despite these and other concerns, global investment in AI has been experiencing strong growth in recent years, and for Accenture(a U.S. multinational management and strategy consulting, technology services and outsourcing firm) by 2035 they will lead to an annual doubling of development in 12 advanced economies and improve productivity by up to 40 percent.
It was Googleitself, in 2014, that absorbed startup DeepMindfor $400 million, one of the most significant acquisitions in the history of the industry. Generous investments also from Spotify, which merged several specialized companies in order to refine content suggestion and the targeting of ADV messages on its platform. The same goes for Amazon with its 15 machine learning centers (one of which in Turin), and eBaywith its recent acquisition of StartUp specialized in the sector… all the biggest market giants, in short, are moving in this direction.
Artificial intelligence is also advancing in the world of financial trading: according to the forecasts of the consulting firm Tractica, revenues obtained thanks to AI-based software will reach 60 billion dollars in 2025, most of which will be achieved through financial transactions. The operation of artificial intelligence, we have previously seen, is based on increasingly sophisticated algorithms and in 2016, according to a study carried out by Aite Group – an independent research and consulting firm with a focus on business, technology and regulations and the impact they can have on the economic services market – 66% of the world’s nominal equity value was traded precisely by algorithms; processes now capable of autonomously building real-time predictive systems and choosing winning strategies in the face of changing contexts. But that’s not all: iSentium(a US startup founded in 2008) has developed AI algorithms even capable of consulting social networks such as Facebookand Twitterand, through logical, grammatical and semantic analysis of texts, assigning values and scores to the notions obtained in order to establish trading strategies.
Another sphere of use of AI in the financial field is the one dedicated to report writing: a synthesis operation carried out on exorbitant amounts of numbers and information (company balance sheets, macroeconomic data, etc.), usually carried out as a “gavetta” by young financial analysts. Today, with the use of logarithms, such reports can be written by a computer at the speed of thousands of pages per minute.
But what is possible now with artificial intelligence is still nothing compared to the changes it will bring about over the next 35 years, according to the study Harvard and Yale – on advancing the sophistication levels of intelligent machines – discussed at the ThINK Digital, organized in Milan by GroupM with the support of The European House Ambrosetti, which was attended by some of the leading experts in the field. By 2024, AI systems will be translating foreign languages better than humans, and by 2027 they will be driving buses, trucks and cars with mastery superior to any driver on the road. In 2049 they will be able to write compelling best-sellers and in 2053 they will perform the first surgeries with complete autonomy.
Looking into the near future, 2018 would seem to be the breakthrough year for artificial intelligence. According to a survey by IDC(a global group specializing in market research, consulting and event organization in the IT and TLC fields), 28% of companies have already adopted AI-like solutions, while 41% intend to proceed on this path within two years. Opinions regarding potential job losses are divergent; US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, for example, assures that AI will not pose a threat to American employment over the next few decades, but on the contrary will offer new job opportunities born from human-machine collaboration. The international management assistance company McKinsey, on the other hand, after analyzing two thousand activities in 820 types of work, has come to the conclusion that in 60% of them at least 30% of the functions can be automated, but that in any case, currently the professions that can be totally automated do not exceed 5%. Moreover, the growth of the productivity given from the aid of the artificial intelligence in the analyzed industrialized Countries, between which Italy, is in a position to climbing from the 0.8 to the 1.4% every twelve months.
The only certainty is that the race towards AI and automation has begun and, unless it is interrupted by some unpredictable cataclysm, it seems to be unstoppable.
At this point, it is absolutely useless and detrimental to be scared out of one’s mind: instead, it will be necessary to prepare and educate oneself, modifying one’s cultural and working structure in order to take advantage of the revolutionary development possibilities that will be offered to us in the near future.

The European Parliament has recently kicked off the EU program called “WiFi4EU”, to finance the installation of a series of completely free internet connections without “discriminatory limitations” in public centers – including outdoor spaces of common accessibility – such as hospitals, schools, public administrations, libraries, etc..

This plan intends to use the funds in a geographically balanced way – depending on the geographical context – giving priority to those who will apply first, with the intention of satisfying at least 6,000 communities within the member states.

Obviously the user entities will have to respect some agreements, among which guarantee the coverage of the operating costs of the network for a minimum of three years – without resorting to advertising or use of data for commercial purposes – and offer users absolutely free, safe and easy access connection. Institutions located in areas where similar free public or private offerings are already in place will not be eligible for funding.

“The WiFi4Eu initiative,” says Carlos Zorrinho (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament), “was a strong political vision that will soon become a concrete reality across the EU and will ensure that no matter where they live or how much they earn, every European benefits from a high-quality Wi-Fi connection. This will improve Europe’s gigabit society, making it economically competitive and socially inclusive.”

The initiative – approved with 582 votes in favor, 98 against and 9 abstentions – is “tuned” with the measure concerning the abatement of roaming deliberated in Brussels on June 15, which allows European telephone users to move between member states using the telephone traffic provided by their operator, without additional costs.
